New looks inside and out, proven mechanicals underneath. introductionthe toyota tundra is a full-size pickup offering realistic work capability and durability. We've found the tundra to be a stable, comfortable truck for towing a 20-foot enclosed car trailer over long distances. Towing capacities top 10,000 pounds on some models, and maximum payload ratings exceed 2,000 pounds. for 2014, there is a new tundra in terms of appearance. The dashboard, electronics and cabin trimming are new and also look better than before. A rearview camera is standard on every 2014 tundra. The engine, suspension and everything underneath are essentially the same with only small calibration changes most owners won't notice. the 2014 toyota tundra lineup is simpler than before. The two-door regular cab only comes in entry-level trim levels and only with a long bed. The double cab with conventional front-hinged, secondary rear side doors seats five or six and comes with 6. 5- or 8-foot beds. Named for the ranch on which the tundra factory sits, the 1794 has requisite big badges, cowboy-color leather and ultrasuede interior, woodgrain trim, and things like ventilated power seats and big jbl sound system to improve the ride after a long day's work. It's a good truck engine with epa fuel-economy ratings of 14/18 mpg city/highway, or 13/17 mpg with 4wd, and standard on most tundra permutations. Most newer competitors offer more power, more mileage or both, but the real world difference tends to be 1-2 mpg. Fog lights are recessed for protection and headlights are single-bulb units; we couldn't verify performance given lightning activity, but every example we drove from sr5 to 1794 had a manual in-cab adjustment for vertical aim, handy for keeping light on the road with a load or trailer on. we find the rear view more improved than the front.

Comprehensive line of superb pickups. introductionthe ford f-150 is the best-selling pickup in america. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. So for 2010, changes are limited to packaging. smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain such as that found at construction sites, and on the open road. Its steering is nicely waited and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,030 pounds. A properly equipped regular cab f-150 is rated to tow up to 11,300 pounds; other models max out in the 9,000-pound range. (the ford super duty range of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) three v8 engines are offered. It is rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet on gasoline (epa 14/20 mpg) and 320 horsepower and 390 pound-feet on e85 with mileage dropped to 10/14 mpg. The mykey programmable vehicle key is standard on all models except the base xl trim level. Supercab trucks add higher fx4 and lariat trim levels, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet) on all but xl models. The flareside bed can not be combined with xl or lariat supercabs. A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty 5. 4-liter package. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. king ranch (from $40,200) is like a lariat with a different attitude. It adds two-tone paint and kr badges, unique wheels, mesh chrome grille, chaparral leather heated and cooled power captain’s chairs with driver memory, running boards, and power folding, heated, signal outside mirrors with chrome caps. Options are essentially limited to a limited-slip differential, alternative axle ratios, 20-inch wheels, sony sound and navigation systems, moonroof, chrome tube running boards and remote start. platinum supercrew (from $42,075) gets a unique satin chrome grille and the only one not styled as three sections, body-color bumpers and wheel lip moldings, 20-inch wheels, power-deploy/retract running boards, satin chrome tailgate trim, tuxedo-stitched leather power captain’s chairs, wood grain and brushed aluminum trim, rain-sensing wipers, power folding/heated mirrors, and unique console. It will start with the 310-hp 5. 4-liter v8 and later get a high-performance engine option, a 6. 2-liter v8 of about 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. But it is the long-travel high-performance suspension, wheels and tires that set it apart, and the assertive styling. the f-150 option list is comprehensive and, although it has been simplified in recent years, it can still resemble the tax code to the uninitiated; there are, for example, three codes for a sliding rear window and five for trailer towing mirrors. We found the towing mirrors work very well. pillars between the doors (called b-pillars) and the rear hand-hold on the pillar may yield an awkward blind spot for some drivers, but everyone should appreciate the windshield pillars (called a-pillars) shaped to help preserve forward vision.

Detail changes for 2008 run the gamut from functional to decorative, the latter a wheels and stripes package for stx models, the former a standard tachometer for xl and stx with manual transmission, tire pressure monitors on the heavy-duty package, plus the availability of a cargo management system, remote start, telescoping towing mirrors, and a rearview camera (that does not require purchase of a navigation system). with one of the deepest beds in the half-ton pickup segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,050 pounds. A foose edition f-150 designed by hot-rod master chip foose will be available as a late-2008 model. The base f-150 xl 17,345) is a short, regular cab two-wheel drive. Wheels are steel, the grille is black and bumpers painted, vinyl covers the floor and seats, and the audio is am/fm. Monotone paint includes the bumpers (gray with tow-tone paint), flares cover 18-inch aluminum wheels, and the door gets keypad entry. On regular cabs 24,105-30,645) the fx4 is $5,750 over the fx2 and there's no long-wheelbase fx4; on supercab and supercrew 28,700-35,445), the 4wd version is a $3,295 premium. the lariat label is reserved for more luxurious, car-like interiors, and does not include regular cab or flareside models; retail prices range from $29,895-$35,595. Fancy bits include 18-inch aluminum wheels, power heated mirrors with signal repeaters, climate control, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, powered driver's seat, trip computer, light-faced gauges, and chrome and arizona beige trim. for 2008, ford will build 5,000 lariat limited f-150s, replete with serial-number plates, spun-metal instrument cluster trim, two-tone leather cabin, color-matched grille and bumpers, and three-dimensional chrome bed side badging. Limited models are offered only as 139-inch wheelbase supercrews in two- 35,160) or all-wheel drive 38,160). top tier among regular production models is the king ranch, with castano leather modeled after the saddles that roamed the texas ranch. Exterior trim is similar to lariats, with color-matching components and arizona beige accents. At this level, items such as heated power seats and power-folding mirrors are standard. And the 2008 ford f-150 shows the evolution of 70 years of function. Angular means easy to clean, easy to park and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. The f-150 is easily recognized in any trim level by the circular front lights within a rectangular housing, stepped front window ledge, opening rear doors on the regular cab, and the tall bed. For 2008, extendable dual-element towing mirrors bring the f-150 in line with the bigger super duty pickups, as well as the ram, titan, and tundra. Any cosmetic sacrifice is well worth the extra visibility with a trailer behind. pillars between the doors may yield a blind spot for those who sit more rearward and everyone should appreciate the windshield pillar designed to help preserve forward vision. The flareside really is more stylish than the styleside bed, that which is essentially a box with some character lines in the sheetmetal, and more space within. The chrome harley badges are a bit much for some of us, but it drew many admiring looks. interiorford has all bases covered inside the f-150, with plenty of patterns, textures and finishes, including at least three different gauges clusters, and the choice of a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat or captain's chairs in many models. Captain's chairs on fx and lariat models, especially with power adjustment and the optional adjustable pedals, provide good driver positioning for virtually everyone. Finding it may take some time because the backrest angle adjustment is manual and the power controls are on the side of the seat with the door very close.

Ford acquired the swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999 and, when it came time to develop the five hundred, employed volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. the ford five hundred is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it more stable handling and better traction, particularly in inclement weather. the v6 engine that comes on all models delivers responsive performance and good fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models come with a continuously variable transmission, a design noted for its responsiveness and efficiency. lineupthe 2006 ford five hundred is available in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited. Each is available with all-wheel drive. All are powered by a 3. 0-liter v6 called the duratec 30 rated at 203 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive models come equipped with a six-speed automatic. Ford first used it in numerical form for the 1957 fairlane 500, the highest trim version of the car that helped ford overtake chevrolet in the sales race. When ford launched a new flagship, the galaxie, in 1959, it again used the 500 badge to indicate the most upscale version. When ford brought back the five hundred (spelled out) as an all-new product for 2005, it was as a separate model and as the new flagship of its fleet of cars. the five hundred is much bigger than the old taurus. The five hundred is 3 inches longer, 1. 5 inches wider, and 4 inches taller than the taurus. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 4. 5 inches longer, which not only gives the car its solid, luxury-car stance but enhances smooth ride quality. the five hundred's basic structure benefits from volvo's extensive safety research. The chief designer said it was a challenge to sculpt a ford-styled body around a volvo chassis, and added that designers used what he calls plainer surfaces with taut lines to give the car a modern look without losing its passenger-car proportions. The five hundred's rounded forms offer a more conservative alternative to the more upright, angular chrysler 300. the five hundred's face has large, jewel-styled and multi-bulb triangular headlight elements on either side of a wide, trapezoidal grille. Chrome accents the front bumper, rear bumper, doors and window frames. Large rear side windows give the five hundred more of a luxury car profile. the tall trunk lid has a spoiler-like lip along its top trailing edge. The rear of the car features large, multi-element and triangular shaped tail lamps and dual, down turned exhaust tips. the se and sel ride on seven-spoke aluminum wheels and continental tires while the limited gets distinctive eight-spoke 18-inch wheels and pirelli tires. interiorthe ford five hundred boasts a roomy cabin. In fact, it's roomier than the big crown victoria (108. 3 cubic feet of passenger space vs. 106. 4 for the crown vic), which is impressive given the five hundred is a foot shorter in overall length. rear-seat room is particularly impressive: in fact, there's more rear legroom (41. 9 inches) than front legroom (41. 2 inches). The dashboard has a covered storage compartment in its top center section. The dashboard comes in silver or wood-grain trim with metal used for the door releases and around the base and top of the gear shift lever. we found the switchgear well designed and easy to use. Audio controls are mounted at the top of the center stack with climate controls beneath. the steeply raked windshield can reflect glare off the top of the dashboard, however, something we noticed with the tan-colored pebble interior. (shale and black interiors are also available.) also, a driver wearing sunglasses can have trouble reading the darkly colored gauges in the se and sel models. The limited light-faced gauges are easier to read. the five hundred has a big trunk (21. 2 cubic feet) that can hold eight sets of golf clubs. The rear seatbacks fold forward to provide enlarged luggage space, and the front passenger's seat (on sel and limited versions) folds down to provide space for a 10-foot long ladder or other object to fit inside the five hundred with the trunk lid closed, a neat trick for a sedan. driving impressionthe ford five hundred accelerates with authority. Steering is nicely weighted and provides good feedback. the disc brakes are impressively effective. The five hundred comes standard with anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), which optimizes front/rear brake bias to shorten stopping distances. While another all-wheel-drive vehicle spun its wheels and struggled mightily to climb the slippery hill, the all-wheel-drive five hundred sedan went right up and over. The next they've grown longer, wider, and taller, with family-size, three-row seating capacity and available v6 power. Cute just isn't enough anymore, and the rav4 is a lot more than cute. after a complete redesign for 2006, the 2007 rav4 gets significant safety improvements. Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted, side-impact airbags are now standard equipment, as are roll-sensing side-curtain airbags for first and second-row seats. Both systems were extra-cost options last year. Electronic entertainment options have also been updated. the recent redesign addressed the buying public's demand for power and space among compact suvs. The rav4's length increased by 14 inches, creating more headroom and legroom for second-row passengers, and increased shoulder room all around. Cargo capacity grew by five cubic feet. Its 3. 5-liter v6 generates 269 horsepower, almost too much for the package, although it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. A v6 rav4 can haul as many as seven people and tow up to 3500 pounds, and it really scoots. Each model adds more features. all three trim levels are available with a 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 and five-speed automatic transmission, increasing the price as follows: base 22,885), sport 24,340) and limited 25,020). A rear-seat entertainment system 1,705) is available only on limited v6. safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist (ba) and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc) and traction control (trac). we're glad to see that toyota has made curtain airbags standard for 2007, because they are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents. Side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design of the 2007 model is more serious and more substantive than those built a few years ago. There are fewer superfluous curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished appearance. this latest rav4's front end contains all the same elements found on older models, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. A wide track gives the rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers. a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. From the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Taillights are positioned fairly high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate visually balances the spare by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside, the 2007 rav4 is as good as ever, but not necessarily better. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish it from earlier models. The most noteworthy changes made for 2006 (and carried over this year) are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues. the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat enables almost any size driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats improve the viewing range through the inside mirror. the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, without bolsters. It's no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch. the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities. the rav4's 104. 7-inch wheelbase delivers more than space for a third row of seats. It also allows almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom, compared to models built before 2006. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. the honda cr-v, the rav4's major competitor, has been redesigned for 2007, but the toyota still either exceeds it significantly, or trails it by a fraction, in headroom and legroom, both front and rear. But the cr-v does not offer a third-row seat. Maximum cargo volume (with all seats stowed) is nearly identical: 73. 0 cubic feet for the toyota, 72. 9 for the honda. the only competitor that comes with a standard third-row seat, the suzuki xl7, is also all-new for 2007. It provides more headroom than the rav4, particularly in the third row (by a significant 1. 6 inches). In legroom, the xl7 gives up half an inch to the rav4 up front, but gets that half inch back in the second row, and betters the toyota by almost a full inch in the third row. But in hip room, it's the xl7 that loses by 1. 6 inches up front, gains a scant 0. 7 inch in the middle, and then loses to the toyota by a whopping 5. 1 inches in the third row. placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who's owned a rav4. The placement and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good, as is the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. It's all styled differently, however. The dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we divined in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover. materials a. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. All are highly capable trucks, even those loaded with luxury features. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. For 2011, the f-150 received a new engine lineup and electric-assist steering on all but 6. 2-powered crew cabs. For 2012, the lariat limited model is no longer offered, but one of the nine f-150 versions should be close enough. a new fx appearance package is for 2012 f-150 fx2 and fx4 models that includes 20-inch wheels and lots of flat-black trim inside and out. All 2012 f-150 4wd models can now be flat-towed behind another vehicle, like a motorhome or larger construction truck. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required, and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,550-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. We found the towing mirrors work very well. pillars between the doors (called b-pillars) and the rear hand-hold on the pillar may yield an awkward blind spot for some drivers, but everyone should appreciate the windshield pillars (called a-pillars) shaped to help preserve forward vision.
